My Student Exchange in Scotland

In 2011, when I was 15, I was in Scotland from August till November. It was a privately organised student exchange in Edinburgh.

Towards the end of the school year in 2011, I decided to go to Scotland for some time and started to organise everything. I actually had made the decision about going abroad a year before. I had even applied to some scholarships for a whole year as an exchange student in the US. But as I didn’t get any of them, I took in consideration the other options I had. This is how I came across Scotland: I already knew German people living there so I got in contact and managed to find a Scottish/English family that was willing to take me in for three months. Apart from that, I also emailed the local High School and, luckily, they were happy to accept me for the time I was staying there as well.

This is how it all started.

I lived with the family and they were just amazing; really kind and caring people. I met up with ‘the Germans’ regularly and went to school as a normal high school student. It actually took me some time to connect to other students and build friendships but after all I did.

My stay was just an overall rewarding time which I’ll never forget 🙂

It was the first time for me being on my own and ‘figuring life out’ on my own.
